Sailing: August 12

It was the first day of school for Iisalmi children. We went out alone in the morning, taking the poodles Eetu and Vilpu for a long lakeside walk in the morning. It was overcast, but still warm. We walked among slender birches and strong firs... and some sort of weed with very broad leaves, bigger than pumpkin ones. I wish I knew more about plants.

Everyone was home by lunch. Pia took us down to the sailing club in the early afternoon, and took the children out for a little sailing lesson. They loved it, especially being able to have a go by themselves after a while. We were going to have a swim, too, but there was a lot of blue green algae about today, so we couldn't. We played some beach volleyball instead. (There are a lot of recreational activities near the lake - playgrounds and so forth.)

Our early dinner was home-smoked and salted salmon - absolutely delicious. Pia made a salad out of mushrooms and spring onions and something creamy as well. Cucumber, tomato and new potatoes topped off a wonderful meal. To top it off, Pia's friend had brought over some fresh-baked pulla, sweet bread. Afterwards, about 6p.m., it was back to the lake again. Dinner does not stop the day here in the summer. Pia's sister Tuija came down to join us, with her little daughters. The youngest, Reeta, is Eleanor's age, and looked almost like her sister.

This time, we all went out in the sail-boats. Jack and Annie had individual ones, Pia took Eleanor and Reeta, and Wayne and I took a larger one... I was in control of the jib. It was very beautiful out on the lake in the sunny evening. The island we were circumnavigating looked lush and secret. Unfortunately, we became becalmed. Kari ( with Tuija and Saara in a motorboat) had to tow us un a string for a lot of the way. The locals thought this was very amusing! I think we might be on you-tube somewhere...

Here are a lot of photos of the evening. We went home for a hot drink and a bit more pulla before bed.
